Position: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Admissions and Retention Specialist

Reports to: Chief Learning Officer Type: Part-time Hours: 6+/week

PRIMARY PURPOSE AND FUNCTION: Performs duties required to successfully recruit, orient, assess, and retain students. Interpret assessment results and update students’ portfolios, make recommendations for appropriate class placements. Coordinate regularly scheduled student follow-up and reassessment. Comply with all Project Learn of Summit County and Ohio Department of Higher Education Aspire policies, procedures, and grant requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Admissions 

  • Conduct new student registration and orientation courses 
  • Ensure proper Aspire required documents and new student registration and orientation paperwork are complete 
  • Develop students’ portfolios •
  • Place students in classes based on assessment results and student availability •
  • Conduct student phone call reminders for registration, orientation, and first day of class
  • Maintain accurate registration and orientation course records
  • Provide statistics for research and evaluation 

Learner Assessment and Retention

  •  Coordinate with the Chief Learning Officer and Instructors to proctor posttests
  • Implement a system for tracking learner progress, advancement, and goal-attainment through standardized posttests, student portfolio review and follow-up
  • Provide feedback to the instructor on students’ goals and assessment results
  • Maintain accurate student records as required by funders
  • Ensure proper learner documentation is completed
  • Assist with phone calls for follow-up and retention
  • Provide statistics for research and evaluation

Fund Development:

  •   Participate in fund development activities as assigned by the Executive Director

Special Projects:

  •  Complete special projects as assigned by the Executive Director

Professional Development:

  • Attend local, state, and/or national conferences related to adult literacy, assessment, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and/or social services administration

EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE:

High school equivalency and related experience in adult learning and literacy, administering and interpreting standardized and performance assessments; and/or social service experience. ESOL experience preferred.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

  • part-time, hourly employee
  • reports to Chief Learning Officer
  • location: Main Office, Downtown Akron and various instructional sites throughout Summit County
  • Works some nights and weekends as needed
  • Some local and overnight travel as needed

Position: ABE/ASE/HSE Instructor

Reports to: Chief Learning Officer  Part-time Hours: 5+/week

PRIMARY PURPOSE AND FUNCTION: Teach student instructional groups and support students in their efforts to accomplish their educational goals. Review student progress using student portfolios and assessments. Work with Project Learn staff to support and retain students.  Comply with all Project Learn of Summit County and Ohio Department of Higher Education Aspire policies, procedures and grant requirements.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Learner Progress, Advancement, and Retention 

  • Teach small group classes in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, lifeskills and other appropriate subjects
  • Utilize various instructional strategies to engage learners
  • Develop and utilize lesson plans in accordance with Ohio Department of Higher Education lesson plan requirements
  • Maintain accurate attendance records for each class
  • Manage portfolios and on-going assessments for each student in the class, which includes goal setting, learner progress, and advancement
  • Utilize assigned instructional volunteers in the classes
  •  

Student Support and Retention Services

  • Work with the Recruitment and Retention Specialist and Student Engagement Coordinator to monitor student progress and follow-up with students who have left the program
  • Participate with other instructors and Project Learn staff to strengthen curriculum and student achievement documentation

Fund Development:

  •   Participate in fund development activities as assigned by the Executive Director

Special Projects:

  •  Complete special projects as assigned by the Executive Director

Professional Development:

  • Attend local, state, and/or national conferences related to adult literacy, assessment, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and/or social services administration

Position: ESOL Instructor

Reports to: Chief Learning Officer  Part-time Hours: 7-9/week

Work with Project Learn staff to support and retain students.  Comply with all Project Learn of Summit County and Ohio Department of Higher Education Aspire policies, procedures and grant requirements.

  • Teach small group classes to non-native English speaking students in speaking, listening, reading and writing, career readiness, life skills and other appropriate subjects as it related to the proficiency of the English Language.
  • Utilize various instructional strategies to engage learners
  • Develop and utilize lesson plans in accordance with Ohio Department of Higher Education lesson plan requirements
  • Maintain accurate attendance records for each class
  • Manage portfolios and on-going assessments for each student in the class, which includes goal setting, learner progress, and advancement
  • Utilize assigned instructional volunteers in the classes
  • Provide statistics for research and evaluation
