Akron, OH
(June 18, 2010) — More than 650 guests including GED graduates, families, and community leaders are expected to attend Project Learn of Summit County’s annual recognition and graduation ceremony on June 22 at 6 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the John S. Knight Center in Akron.
In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of recent GED graduates, Project Learn will recognize the volunteers and community partners that have devoted their time and energy in helping these GED graduates achieve their goals.
"We are very proud of our GED graduates,” said Executive Director Rick McIntosh. “They deserve to be honored for their diligent efforts."
Yolunda Boxdale will give the words of inspiration to the new class of 2010. Boxdale’s story is unique – she was selected as the 2008 Adult Learner of Year, but a family illness prevented her from attending her graduation ceremony. She was invited to participate in this year’s ceremony to receive her award.
Cody Mathia will be awarded the 2010 Adult Learner of the Year Award. At first, Mathia revealed to his GED Instructor, Margaret Johnson, that he was illiterate. After working with Johnson, Mathia became a confident reader. Mathia acknowledges the key to his success in reading is practice and repetition. His persistence paid off as he recently passed the GED exam.
Ana Isabel Diaz will be recognized as the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Student of the Year. Diaz works 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Even after a long day at work, she heads directly to her ESOL class. On numerous occasions, Diaz has walked to class in torrential weather. Regardless, she arrives to class with a cheerful smile and a positive attitude – ready to learn.
Despite all these adversities, these students demonstrate determination, persistence and tenacity in achieving their lifelong goals.
"We are thrilled that Project Learn can give these individuals the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments,” explained McIntosh. “For many of our students, like Yolanda and Cody, getting the chance to wear a cap and gown and walk across the stage fills a missing part of their life."
Project Learn will also present other awards to its supporters, tutors and volunteers. Awardees include:
• Literacy is Life Award – Callie Mae Williams
• Outstanding Community Partner – Catholic Social Services
• Tutors of the Year Award – Mike and Ann Fremon
• Volunteer of the Year – Chuck Hunter
The commencement address will be delivered by Bob Kulinski, president of United Way of Summit County.
