Local Leaders Recognized at Agency's 8th Annual Leaders for Literacy Breakfast

Akron, OH (April 9, 2009) — More than 100 community leaders gathered to recognize the individuals and organizations that have supported Project Learn and its goal to fight illiteracy in Summit County.

The agency hosted its annual Leaders for Literacy Breakfast on March 18 to raise awareness about Project Learn and the services it provides, while recognizing individuals and organizations that have helped in the agency's dedication to serving the 45,000 people in Summit County who are illiterate.

This year, Project Learn recognized Akron Children's Hospital, The City of Akron, Jean Gadd and the Sisler McFawn Foundation. (See the winners).

Congratulations!

Akron Children’s Hospital (Corporate)
Akron Children’s Hospital is known across the country for its dedication to providing quality medical care to infants, children, adolescents and burn victims of all ages. Akron Children’s is committed to promoting the integrity of the family and child, and ensuring the needs of children and adolescents are addressed. Project Learn is thankful that Akron Children’s is a supporter of our mission and continues to nurse the children of our students.

The City of Akron (Community)
The City of Akron understands the meaning of true partnership. The City of Akron’s EEO and Training Office has partnered with Project Learn to provide services for employees who are in need of workplace literacy training. Together, both organizations provide assistance to individuals in order to make a positive contribution to the workforce. The City of Akron is committed to improving the quality of life for its residents, and has united with Project Learn to ensure a successful future for our community.

Jean Gadd (Individual)
Jean Gadd is truly an asset to Project Learn. Her dedication and motivation inspires the staff and other board members to provide the best adult and family literacy services we can. She volunteers her time to guarantee Project Learn’s mission is known throughout the community. Project Learn is lucky to have Jean as a literacy champion and volunteer.

Sisler McFawn Foundation (Philanthropic)
Established in 1960, the Foundation has been a strong believer in higher education and has made substantial promise that have directly assisted many Project Learn students. The Foundation mainly focuses on giving in the fields of education, health care services, youth and the improvement of public health. By donating more than $90,000 to our organization, Project Learn has been able to offer more services to our students, staff and community. The money donated has been used for general operating support and small group programming. Without these funds, Project Learn would not be able to continue serving the community. We are grateful for the aid we receive from this foundation, and would like to thank them for supporting our mission.
