Project Learn's 9th Annual Leaders for Literacy Awards Breakfast

State and national literacy leaders speaking at annual breakfast

Akron, OH (April 20, 2010) — Project Learn of Summit County will welcome state and national literacy leaders at the 9th annual Leaders Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, April 27 at 7:30 a.m. The breakfast will be held at the Martin University Center at The University of Akron.

Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) Director, Jeff Gove will be one of the guest speakers. The Ohio Board of Regents recently named Gove as the new State (ABLE) Director. Gove has been acting in this capacity since September 2009, and he has worked in adult education at the state level for the past 18 years. President and CEO of ProLiteracy, David Harvey will also be speaking as well. Harvey heads the world’s largest organization of adult literacy and basic education programs. He is also the author of many peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

In addition, four literacy leadership winners will be recognized for their support to Project Learn: Summit College at The University of Akron, Boeco, Inc., Lloyd L. & Louise K. Smith Memorial Foundation. Akron attorney Janice Romanoski will be honored for her dedication and service as a member of Project Learn’s Board of Directors and chair of the Board Development Committee.

According to Executive Director of Project Learn, Rick McIntosh, “Our focus this year is on helping our GED graduates make the transition to post-secondary education, whether college or different training programs. Most high school graduates need more education in order to increase their lifetime earning potential.”

Due to the expansion of Project Learn’s programming, McIntosh says the number of GED graduates is expected to double this year. As a result of this growth, more caps and gowns are needed for the annual commencement ceremony planned for June 22 at the John S. Knight Center in Akron. "Participating in our graduation ceremony is very important for most of our GED graduates,” McIntosh explains. “We reuse the caps and gowns each year, but we don’t own enough. That’s why we are asking our supporters for this one-time investment.”

Those interested in donating a cap and gown, please send a check in the amount of $50 to Project Learn, 60 S. High Street, Akron, OH 44326. For more information, contact Rick McIntosh at 330-434-9461.

Tickets to the breakfast at the Martin University Center at The University of Akron are still available for $50 by calling Rick McIntosh at 330-434-9461.
